Desktop Publishing

 Face pictures into a publication  City, state and zip code goes on the same line  Place address on one or two lines but second line must be under the first.  Pictures must reflect the message you are trying to communicate.  Text size must convey the most important information.  Think about what info. needs to be on the publication and make sure you place it on the publication.  You may go through the wizard on most publications but you must erase ALL text boxes.  Use no more than two or three different types of fonts. However, choose fonts that are very different.

 Credit card size  Landscape orientation  Individual name on card must include their title  Large businesses may not need a person’s name  Include address, phone #, fax #, website address and address  Hours may be included  Slogan/Logo  Picture can be text  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications

 Place on 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper in portrait orientation.  Letterhead can not go below 2 ½ inches from top  May have information at bottom but no larger than one inch.  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications  Include address, phone #, fax #, website address and a general address i.e.,  No personal names because people leave the business.  No other information can be on the letterhead.  Remember this is to place in the printer and print a letter on the page.

 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper  Can be portrait or landscape orientation  Very large pictures  Very large text  Very LITTLE text (no paragraphs)  Include who, what, where, when, and occasionally why. It is not necessary to place who, what, when, where and why WORDS before the information i.e., What: Blood Drive  Control white space; not too much or little. Remember white space gives the reader a chance to rest their eyes and it also leads people to the next information you want them to see.  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications (if used)

 Go through the wizard  Will use one sheet of paper but will print actually four sides.  Include who, what, when, where and why  Include pictures that help to communicate your message.  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications

 Larger than 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper  Must use 300 ppi instead of 72 ppi  Very large pictures and/or text  Name of business  Not necessary to put any other contact information except for business (optional- very small)  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications (if used)

 Go through wizard and erase all text boxes  Logo/Slogan must be same on all publications (if used)  Use lots of pictures  Include events and times  Print information on all four pages

 Go through wizard and erase all textboxes  Make ONLY TWO columns no matter how many columns the publication on the wizard uses.  Two pages and print front and back.  No more than ½” between columns.  The two columns should end on the same line. Use leading if needed to change the spacing.  Heading only on the first page  Do not use a table of contents with only two pages.

 Use the same heading styles on all headings. Follow font, size, color, alignment, spacing, etc.  Place pictures on the edge. You should never have text around all four sides of a picture. Two sides are even better. Our eyes have to jump over the picture. The least our eyes have to jump the better.  One picture per article. If you use more pictures, you must get approval.  Pictures should be the right size. Don’t put pictures in an article just to take up space.  Pictures are to enhance the article so use relevant pictures.  Place pictures in the article where you are talking about it. If picture is not in article, put a caption below the picture.

 Text should be no larger than 10 to 12 pts. using Courier New. I am not saying to use Courier New. I am saying to use a font size no larger than Courier New size 10 to 12.  Use one inch margins all the way around.  Use a San Serif, Serif, or Decorative font for the heading  Use a serif font for the body or the approved san serif fonts. San serif approved fonts are Tahoma, Verdana, and Arial.  Use a font that is easy to read.  Never use all caps or cursive writing in the body.  All caps is acceptable for the heading main heading and the article headings.

 Go through wizard and erase all textboxes.  Use a trifold brochure.  Two pages and print front and back in landscape orientation.  The columns should end on the same line. Use leading if needed to change the spacing.  Use the same heading styles on all headings. Follow font, size, color, alignment, spacing, etc.

 Place pictures on the edge. You should never have text around all four sides of a picture. Two sides are even better. Our eyes have to jump over the picture. The least our eyes have to jump the better.  You may use as many pictures as needed to get your message across to the reader-don’t overkill.  Pictures should be the right size. Don’t put pictures in an article just to take up space.  Pictures are to enhance the article so use relevant pictures.  Place pictures in the article where you are talking about it. If picture is not in article, put a caption below the picture.
