Orton Lesson Plan Joanie Gerken

Structure of the Lesson Drill -single phonemes/ syllables –8-10 minutes total –Warm – up exercise –Visual (read/sound flash card) –Auditory (echo/write spell same cards)

Review &Reinforcement –Make words from sounds studied in drill part of lesson –15 minutes –Could be worksheet, game –Visual read column of 10 words/phrases or sentence –Auditory (use 8-10 different words/same skill from visual drill)—dictate, echo, write

New Information –Put new phoneme on card, discuss, introduce sound in isolation, air trace, echo –20 minutes –Visual (read list of 10 – 12 words)/ keep simple so emphasis is on new phoneme –Auditory –use trace, write, copy sheet/ or dictate 5 or 6 words for spelling

When there is time or later in the week: Oral Reading - use new information in sentences or short paragraphs for reading and highlighting Written Expression - write 2 sentences with new words
