CURCA and The University Press of North Georgia Presents: The Art of Creating an Undergraduate Research Journal

TODAY, WE WILL TALK ABOUT: DEVELOPING AN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL  Why do you want to start an undergraduate research journal?  What is the journal going to look like?  When is the right time to start an undergraduate research journal? GROUP COLLABORATION DISCUSSION (10 minutes for people to brainstorm. 10 minutes for general conversation.)  Those who are interested in starting an undergraduate research journal  Those who are in the process of starting an undergraduate research journal  Those who already have an undergraduate research journal SETTING UP A SUCCESSFUL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL  Mission/Vision  Submission requirements and review guidelines  Timeline PAPERS AND PUBLICATIONS AS AN EXAMPLE

WHY START AN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL? WHAT IS THE JOURNAL GOING TO LOOK LIKE? WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO START A JOURNAL? HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT STARTING A SUCCESSFUL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL? ?

WHY? Why do you want to start an undergraduate research journal?

Design Mission Vision

WHAT? InterdisciplinaryRegional Open Access Web-Based Post-Publication Review

HOW TO SHAPE YOUR JOURNAL “In House” VS Regional VS National In Print VS Digital Single Discipline VS Interdisciplinary Possible Competition Researchers to Explore the Competition

WHEN? When support from the administration and leadership is present. When there is a need for this type of journal. When at least part of the existing infrastructure necessary for the journal is in place.

GROUP COLLABORATION AND DISCUSSION Thinking of Starting a Journal:  Do you have the resources to start a journal right now?  If so, what are some key resources that will help you do this?  If not, what do you need?  How might you build up an infrastructure from what you have currently in place?  What needs would a journal fill for you?  Why?  How? Are in the Process of Starting a Journal:  Do you have all the support and infrastructure in place already?  If not, what are some challenges you have faced in the process of starting the journal?  What resources might you develop and how?  Who is your target audience?  Why?  How will you reach them?  Is the journal sustainable in terms of indirect and direct costs/resources? Have a Journal Already in Place:  What were some challenges you faced when starting an undergraduate research journal?  What are some of the best practices that helped you establish a journal?  What would you do differently?  What audience(s) does it serve?  How does the scholarship contribute to respective research fields?  How do students and faculty mentors benefit?  How is the faculty mentor’s work evaluated in annual review?

WHY DID WE GO WITH BEPRESS? PEER REVIEW OPTIONS Bepress is the one we’ve used. Other peer review management systems that are available are Temple Peer Review Manager ( Scholar One ( and Rapid Review (

Why do you want to start a UR journal? What will the journal look like? When is the right time to start a journal? How do you go about setting up a UR journal? List the motivations for creating a UR journal: Use motivation on the left to craft a vision of the journal: Do you have the resources/infrastructure/need necessary? List the infrastructure that is available or that could be ‘repurposed’: Mission/vision of journal based on the “Why” and “What” columns: List the infrastructure/leadership support/resources needed: Incorporate important “impact factors” into the submission and review process. What is a reasonable timeline for the publishing process? How will the workflow and milestones be established? Who will manage production?
