Do Now Today’s questions are: Other than the 3 G’s what other reasons would someone (can be a common person) leave their country to go to a new one? If it helps, try and think of reasons even in today’s world. Is the risk vs reward for a regular/common person greater than an explorer? Why?

Do Now With the knowledge you already have through the notes and worksheets we’ve done, if forced to, which side (Europeans/Colonists or Native Americans) would you fight for? Explain your reasoning

Colonization in America I.Reasons for colonization - There is a growing population - Religion - People wanted to spread Christianity and others angry at the church - America is seen as a place where they can worship whatever they want

- Money and land - America gives the poor an opportunity for a better life - Decrease in food supply - Disease - War - Spain and England are at war  Defeat of the Spanish Armada

A. Colonies become a money maker - The more money they make, the more powerful they become - Also farm new crops like tobacco - Nations will fight for land in the America’s - Will also have to fight Indians =

B. Colonies are a solution - High Unemployment rate, crime, and poverty (poor) - Colonies became a place for these people - Prisoners/criminals will also be sent to the America’s

C. Religious factors for colonization - People will question the Catholic Church - Claim there is corruption - These people will be run out of England

1.Martin Luther - Luther nails a list of 95 things wrong with the church  He believed in “Salvation through faith alone” - Starts the Protestant Religion

2. John Calvin - He believed in Pre- Destination  Pre-Destination – Your fate is already pre-determined for you -Also thinks there are “chosen people”

- You should live your life as close to God as possible and have a government and community like biblical times. - These people will become the Pilgrims
