He wants to earn money to purchase a car when he turns sixteen. However, he does not know where to begin the job search process or how to complete an application. What should he do?

Questions can be asked immediately about the application. The application can be returned in a more timely manner.  Drawbacks Must have all information present to be able to complete the application completely. Do not have the opportunity to start over multiple times if a mistake is made. The process becomes rushed.

May take their time to ensure no mistakes are made. Has more time to read over the application multiple times.  Drawbacks Application is more likely to be misplaced. Less convenient to return to the business to submit the application. The process will take longer.

Not receive the job you applied for Be fired

Use a professional address.  Example: Voice mail messages should be professional.  Use one that includes your name and number so they can confirm they have reached the right person. Music or poor language is not appropriate.

Professional Reference – often someone who has supervised an individual in the work force. Check the following information with references prior to using them:  Preferred phone number, , mailing address, and time of day that they can be reached. Always ask permission to use someone as a reference!

In April 2008 the federal minimum wage was set at $6.55/hour. Often individual states have their minimum wage set above the federal minimum wage.

More than 18 hours per week in school weeks. More than 8 hours per day on non school days. More than 40 hours per week when school is not in session.

After the application is returned, an employer may request an individual to be tested for illegal substances. Do a follow up phone call in three business days to inquire about any questions and to be sure the correct person received the application.
