Endocrine System

Endocrine System Endocrine – “ductless glands” Secretions directly enter blood and travel to every body organ But not all cell respond…only target cells w/specific receptors Ligands – chemicals bind to receptors Hormones are types of ligands

Functional Classification of Hormones Autocrine Do not travel in blood, but other body fluids Mostly interact with the cell that produced them Paracrine Travel short distances via blood or body fluids to target cells Coordinates cells within an organ Pheromones Secretions leave body and signal cells of other organisms Used for identification and sexual behavior

Structural Classifications of Hormones Peptide Hormones Made of amino acids Initiate rapid changes in the body Stay in blood (broken down there) Lipid Hormones Made from cholesterol and fats Long lasting effects Broken down within a cell Used to regulate body fluid and sexual reproduction

Organs of Endocrine System Pituitary Gland Pineal Gland Adrenal Gland Thyroid & Parathyroid Pancreas Thymus Gonads Ovary Testis (Placenta)
