Major Assignments and Weeks Due Unit 6: Research Analysis (60 Points) The article used for this assignment deals with the significant issues for parents and children with Autism. After reading the article and completing the research analysis, you should have a clear understanding of often- misunderstood parental issues concerning children with Autism disorders. Follow the grading rubric closely to ensure you address all required sections.

Major Assignments and Weeks Due Unit Unit 7: Final Project: Inclusion Interviews (340 Points) For your final project you will formulate a statement about co-teaching that incorporates the knowledge and insights you have gained in your readings and through interviewing 2 teachers: a special education teacher and a regular education teacher. If you have an existing inclusive classroom in your school, try to interview teachers already involved in the inclusive process. If you do not have access to teachers who are already co-teaching, interview both a regular and a special education teacher who have knowledge of the inclusive setting.

Transition services have become an integral part of the education for a student with a disability. Although IDEA legislation was passed in 1997, many students with special needs are exiting high school without the skills necessary to become independent members of society, obtain gainful employment, or participate in recreational activities. Have you seen the movie, I Am Sam ? This film provides insight into the possible lifelong effects of coping with a disability. Think about how your school does or does not provide transitional education experiences for students with special needs so that they may enter into the world of work with employable skills. Special Olympics Did you know? Special Olympics is an international organization created to help people with intellectual disabilities develop self-confidence, social skills and a sense of personal accomplishment. Among their other activities, Special Olympics conducts the Special Olympics World Games every 2 years alternating between Summer and Winter Games.

The first International Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago in Anne McGlone Burke, a physical education teacher with the Chicago Park District, began with the idea for a one-time Olympic-style athletic competition for people with special needs. Burke then approached. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation funded the event in memory of her late sister Rosemary Kennedy, who had mental disabilities.

Special Olympics Did you know? More than 2.5 million athletes of all ages are involved in Special Olympics sports training and competition in more than 180 countries. The organization offers year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports.

Week 5 Seminar Topic Special Olympics for Individuals with Cognitive Impairments. For this week’s Seminar, we will be focusing on social and physical recreational opportunities for individuals who are cognitively impaired. The oath of the Special Olympics is: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” What does this oath mean to you?

Week 5 Seminar What are the benefits of the Special Olympics? To the individual? To the parents of cognitively impaired children? To the community? What strategic community alliances could you see the Special Olympics Committee forming? Explain.
