September 2013 Updates: Art Attack term 3

I volunteered to help put up the new Lewers Learning Centre exhibition, so I spent a few very pleasant hours threading paper boats on thin threads with some lovely ladies, while munching tea and cookies!

Naomi McCarthy (my direct boss and the head of education at the gallery) collected 1000 paper origami boats, with kids’ dreams written in them, from schools around the area (Hahgoot’s class made some too!). The boats were then threaded and hanged in the shape of a boat’s haul, in a dark room lit with UV light. A truly haunting installation! In the room there were special tables with beautiful paintings of constellations, inviting people to sit around and fold their own paper boat or crane.

There were other exhibits too like Indonesian shadow puppets, paper cuts of the opera house and model boats.

I finished the term with my art class with a clay project, following our portraiture theme. It was hard work but they all got the proportions right! It wasn’t a self portrait; they used the mirrors to look at the proportions and location of face parts.

They had to make the head busts with an expression and add details.

We finished off by painting the paper clay busts. Cute, aren’t they? See you next time, in the October presentations!
