S. E. Hinton Susan Eloise Hinton S. E. Hinton began to write The Outsiders when she was 15 years old; the novel was published when she was 18. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, S. E. This influenced her to write novels such as The Outsiders, her first novel, which was published in 1967. S.E. Hinton was, and still is, one of the most popular and best-known writers of young adult fiction. Her books have been taught in some schools, and banned from others.
