Analyze how a writer uses characterization to develop a portrait of a real person. Emulate and apply a writer’s techniques to one’s own writing.

1. Name two pieces of irony in chapters Describe Jim and his opinion of Chris. 3. Describe Wayne and his opinion of Chris. 4. Why did Wayne go to jail? 5. In Chapter three what do we learn of Chris’s family? 6. Where did “Alex” move to? 7. List a job Alex did for Wayne Westerberg. 8. What did Alex do with $24,000? 9. What does Chris seem to dislike in society? 10. Do you like Chris? Why or why not?

Write what you know of Christopher McCandless so far, citing at least one quote for each method. You will add to the chart as you learn more Chris

AdjectiveCharacterization Evidence Brainstorm a list of different adjectives describing McCandless that stem from Krakauer’s descriptions. Try to select adjectives that carry strong connotations. For each adjective, identify at least one piece of characterization that led to that impression.

 Emulate Krakauer’s use of characterization to create an impression of a famous character in a book or movie.. Do not name the person in your text. Be sure to:  Select an adjective that describes the person, then choose diction, details, and a structure to describe him/her.  Incorporate at least two characterization methods from this activity into your text.  Punctuate dialogue correctly.
