May 17 th 1917 France Dear Mrs Stephens, I feel I must write to you if it’s only a few words of sympathy in regards to you missing son. I feel absolutely terrible. He was only a young lad and I took him under my wing. I feel responsible for him going missing. We were ordered to go go over the top. I told him to say close to me but in the chaos he must have got lost. I fear the worst. I would just like to take a few moments to tell you about you sons conduct and military skill whilst here in the trenches. He was hardworking and kind hearted soldier. He was a very patriotic lad, so much so that he volunteered to serve his king and country in the trenches. He killed many a Gerry and we were all very impressed by his shooting skills. Despite his young age he was a role model for other soldiers. I feel very privileged that I got to know him even though it was only for a short time. Keep your chin up Mrs Stephens he may turn up one day. Before I end this letter would just once again like to express my great sorrow and regret for your loss and inform you that there wasn’t a day that went by when Will didn’t talk about his caring mamma and his wonderful family.
