4 In a village in Iran there once lived a shepherd. He was very poor
In a village in Iran there once lived a shepherd. He was very poor. He did not have even a small cottage of his own. He had never been to school or learnt to read and write, for there were very few schools in those days.

5 The shepherd was very wise. He understood people’s sorrows and troubles. He helped them. Many people came to him for advice. Soon he became famous for his wisdom and friendly nature.

6 The king of that country heard about him and thought of meeting him
The king of that country heard about him and thought of meeting him. One day he came to the shepherd. As soon as the shepherd saw the traveller coming towards the cave, he rose to welcome him.

7 He took him inside the cave, gave him water to drink and food to eat
He took him inside the cave, gave him water to drink and food to eat. The king rested for the night in the cave. He was impressed by the shepherd’s hospitality and wise conversation. The king decided to appoint the shepherd the governor of a small district.

8 People loved and honoured him for his wisdom, sympathy and goodness
People loved and honoured him for his wisdom, sympathy and goodness. He was kind and just to one and all. His fame as a fair and wise governor soon spread through out the country.

9 The other courtiers grew jealous of the new shepherd
The other courtiers grew jealous of the new shepherd. They began to talk to the king against him. They said “He is very dishonest, and keeps for himself the part of money that he collects as tax from the people. Why does he always carry an iron chest with him.’’

10 At first the king did not pay any attention to there reports
At first the king did not pay any attention to there reports. But one day ,he called the new governor to the palace. He came riding on his camel, carrying the iron chest with him. The king was very angry. He asked" why do you always carry the iron chest with you? What does it contain?”

11 The governor smiled. He asked his servants to bring in the iron chest
The governor smiled. He asked his servants to bring in the iron chest. Holding it up proudly the shepherd said, ”This ,My dear master, is my only treasure. I always carry it with me”.

12 But why do you carry such an ordinary blanket with you. The king asked
But why do you carry such an ordinary blanket with you? The king asked. “This blanket is my oldest friend. It will protect me if, at any time, your Majesty should wish to take away my new cloak. “The king was pleased and made him the governor of a bigger district.

Ans6)  The shepherd always carried the iron chest as it was his best friend. The blanket would protect him if the king took away new royal clothes. Q7) Is it an example of the shephered‘s humility or wisdom or both? Ans7) It was an example of the shepherd’s humility as well as wisdom.

Ans8) The king rewarded the new governor by making him the governor of a much bigger district.
