Jesus vs Religion

Religion is: a set of beliefs and actions that when believed and performed make a person right with God.

Religion is: a set of beliefs and actions that when believed and performed make a person right with God. The absence of beliefs and actions show this person is not right with God.

Religion is: a set of beliefs and actions that when believed and performed make a person right with God. The absence of beliefs and actions show this person is not right with God. Religion operates on the principle of “I obey -- therefore I am accepted by God.”

The message of Jesus is: “I am accepted by God through the work of Jesus Christ -- therefore I obey.”

~ Bono, from the book: Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas. “ I'd be in big trouble if karma was going to finally be my judge. I'd be in deep s[tuff]. It doesn't excuse my mistakes, but I'm holding out for grace. I'm holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don't have to depend on my own religiosity. ~ Bono, from the book: Bono: In Conversation with Michka Assayas.

Jesus vs Religion: Round Three The False Hope of Religion Luke 12:1-12 Today’s Message: Jesus vs Religion: Round Three The False Hope of Religion Luke 12:1-12

Luke 12:1-12 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

Luke 12:1-12 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Luke 12:1-12 8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

Luke 12:1-12 11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”

The Scene Luke 12:1a 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another…

Jesus’ warning about the Pharisees Luke 12:1b-3 …Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.”

What is hypocrisy?

Jesus’ warning about the Pharisees Luke 12:1b-3 …Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.”

Jesus’ warning to the disciples Luke 12:4-5 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.”

What does it mean to fear God?

“ Fear, in this case, is not awe in the face of divine splendor but the trepidation indigenous to situations of life imperilment…Jesus has spoken of his own impending death and promised few alternatives for those desiring to become his followers (9:22–23)…Fear in the face of death, then, is more specifically fear in the face of life-threatening persecution on account of one’s identification with God’s purpose as this is expounded by Jesus… ~Joel Green, New International Commentary of the New Testament , The Gospel of Luke

“ By insisting on the substitution of one fear for another—fear of those who can kill the body versus fear of him who has the authority to cast into hell—Jesus introduces a logic whose point is not immediately obvious…Jesus asserts that, in hostile situations of life imperilment, God is the only one who should be feared, but the character of God is such that one need not fear him! ~Joel Green, New International Commentary of the New Testament , The Gospel of Luke

Numinous Awe How do people, in any religion at all, respond when they get near the divine being? Numinous Awe is a violent contradiction of fear and fascination, of approach and avoidance. Rudolph Otto, German Sociologist of Religion, The Idea of the Holy

“God could NEVER make such a place!” The Doctrine of Hell OBJECTIONS: “God could NEVER make such a place!” 33

“God could NEVER make such a place!” The Doctrine of Hell OBJECTIONS: “God could NEVER make such a place!” Universalism Annihilationism Second Probation 34

The Doctrine of Hell Isaiah 66:24 24“And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind.” 35

The Doctrine of Hell Matthew 5:27-30 27“You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” 36

The Doctrine of Hell Matthew 8:28, 29 28When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no-one could pass that way. 29“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” 37

The Doctrine of Hell 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10 5All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. 6God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 10on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. 38

What is the proper response to hell?

If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our bodies; and if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay, and not madly to destroy themselves. If hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for. Charles Spurgeon

Jesus’ comfort for the disciples Luke 12:6-7 6 “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

“ This is the conceptualization of God as one who can count what humans cannot count and, so, whose knowledge surpasses that of humans and whose design, therefore, cannot be grasped fully by humans. The point, then, is that sparrows can be bought and sold and that humans can suffer persecution, but not apart from God’s attentiveness, not outside of God’s care, not in a way that circumvents the redemptive plan of God. Jesus’ words contrast the limited knowledge of human beings with the mysterious omniscience of God. ~Joel Green, New International Commentary of the New Testament , The Gospel of Luke

How we are to relate to God the Son Luke 12:8-10a 8 “I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. ”

How we are to relate to God the Spirit Luke 12:11-12 11 When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”
