Region The Pomo people are mostly from the region of California Intermountain. They live on the Pacific Coast in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area between Cleone and Duncan's Point, and inland to Clear Lake. A separate group speaking a language of the same family, called the Northeastern Pomo, also lived near Stonyford. There climate was very warm because they lived in Northern California.

Foods of the Pomos Some of the foods are acorns, salmon, surf fish,mussels, sea lions, bulb plants, deer and small game, such as rabbits. Pomos had been fishermen and hunters, known especially for their intricate basketry made from lakeshore tules and other native plants and feathers.

Clothing of the Pomos The pomos wore deer skin boots in the winter to keep their feet warm. Their dress was simple. Women wore a fringed skirt or apron made of buckskin and if the weather demanded it a deer cape or blanket over their shoulders. Young men wrapped a fur around their hips. In cold weather a deerskin served as a blanket.

Pomos Shelter For shelter the somewhat nomadic Pomo made shelters from materials that were in abundance, such as redwood branches and brushes and mud over a rough frame.

Interesting Pomos Facts Pomo people were wiped out by Russian fur traders, white miners and farmers. The Pomo and the Coast Yuki were friendly with all of the neighboring tribes. Numerous Pomo tribes have been federally recognized.
