The TEAM Thing …trying to get weird people to function together … Presented by Steve Thomas November 4, 2015 [session five] RETHINK!

Characteristics of the effective team

Almost anything that functions together as one can be considered a team! You have to decide what team looks like to you. WHAT IS TEAM? Session one…

What does every leader have to have to be a leader? Followers!! Session two… Effective teams are lead by effective and “followable” leaders.

The FOLLOWABLE leader… Character people believing in you as a person Competence people believing in your ability Confidence people believing that you believe Connection people believing you believe in them How is your FOLLOWABILITY?

Unintentional (+) Contribution Intentional (+) Contribution Unintentional (-) Contribution Intentional (-) Contribution 4 kinds of team players… Session three…

DO + ARE Who you What you Job descriptions Strategy Org chart Core values Team operating values Vows = Complete Culture What does each look like and how do you deal with them?

FOUNDATIONS OF TEAM +1 Trust +2 Understanding +3 Acceptance +4 Encouragement +5 Authenticity +6 Accountability What is the thread that runs through all of this? Session four…

Session five… Characteristics of the effective team! So, first…What would make us ineffective? (or get us stuck?) Effective teams are introspective and looking for ways to improve by eliminating barriers.

Sometimes we can get stuck, even with the best intentions.

Possible causes of STUCK 1.Success 2.Chaos 3.Fringe 4.Fatigue 5.Busy for your team!

5 Stumbles of Success 1.They are crazy BUSY! 2.They get really COMPLACENT/COMFORTABLE! 3. They begin to live/believe it’s GOOD ENOUGH! 4. They begin to forget/ignore CHANGE! 5. They get their eyes off the PURPOSE! 1. Be aware of Success > Effectiveness

2. Don’t allow Chaos > Order Effective teams create order by… 1.Establishing purpose 2.Creating the vision 3.Understanding values/boundaries 4.Setting the direction and goals 5.Knowing and working on priorities 6.Making right decisions

Purpose Vision Values Goals Priorities Decisions Alignment Matters!

Purpose Vision Values Goals Priorities Decisions Why matters! Where we are going matters! Who we are/boundaries matter! What we achieve/outcomes matter! Where we spend our time, effort and energy matters! How we make decisions rests on all the above!

3. The Fringe > Core can be devastating Could be the difference in UN(-)Con vs. IN(+)Con!

FRINGE CASUAL CORE

FRINGE CASUAL CORE Who would be most likely to stay late, come in early, and go above and beyond? Who is going to be most involved in decision- making and giving new ideas? Who is most likely to be proud of the company they work for? Who is most likely to come to “connection” activities?

Who is most likely to get bored? Who is most likely to drink from this cup? Who is most likely to “hide” during the day? FRINGE CASUAL CORE

Engaged employees work with passion and feel a profound connection to their company. They drive innovation, and move the organization forward. Disengaged employees are essentially “checked out.” They are sleepwalking through their workday, putting time – but not passion – into their work. Actively Disengaged employees aren’t just unhappy at work; they are busy acting out their unhappiness. Every day, these workers undermine what their engaged coworkers accomplish. Gallup says…

The high cost of disengaged team members… Poor sales results missed deadlines higher turnover no extra effort undermine others’ performance do-overs more sick days used medical expenses increase… They cost organizations $500 Billion every year!!

4. It is easy for Fatigue > Energy Results of fatigue in the organization… 1. Lots of talk, not much communication 2. Pettiness is present everywhere 3. Disagreements are aired in private conversations 4. Get and stay stuck for longer period of times 5. Our collective “tank” is emptying 6. There is a sense of purposelessness 7. Indifference and apathy > passion

5. The trap is when Busy > Purpose

BUSY is your enemy!

Why being busy can keep you from getting ahead… 1.We don’t prioritize well 2.We lose sight of the big picture 3.We impair our creativity 4.We slow down our brains Forbes.com August 21, 2012 Caroline McMillan

Getting UNstuck… Revisit the purpose often Remind the team of the small wins Get outside help Change team members and/or positions Develop more core players Hold one-on-one’s to make a difference Create core values or rework what you have Get back to effectiveness over success Establish team boundaries

Tiny elements of teamwork that make teams work! Now…
