HF Front-end status Tullio Grassi 11 Dec 2012

Overview The HF FEE will change entirely, including the backplane. Only the cable plant (fiber, copper) will be kept, with some possible additions. The target date for the installation is December 2015.

GBTX ASIC USCMS does support of the test setup (T. Grassi, JC Da Silva). Talks for having a person from UERJ (Brazil) to help with the tests. The bare chips have arrived to Cern. No test will be performed before packaging. Packaged chips could be back in Feb 2013, presently the main issue is the package itself.

Optical data transceivers and transmitters VTRx and VTTx are Cern-made modules (J. Troska, etc). They include custom ASICs (GBTLD, GBTIA) and radiation-qualified parts, bought from industry (laser, PIN diode). HCAL needs: Single-Mode VTRx for the ngCCM main links Multi-Mode VTRx for the ngCCM redundancy links Multi-Mode VTTx for the RM data links. HCAL has received two samples of SM VTRx, tested at UVA (S. Goadhouse), transmission is ok  ok to order full quantity of laser for SM. Working in progress to match the VTRx, VTTx production schedule with HF needs.

DC-DC converter Cern-developed rad-tol, mag-tol converters to be mounted on Front-End boards. HCAL tested early samples in ~2010. Max current = 3 Amp  HF, HCAL will need a few thousands. Cost = 50 chf, half of which is an air-core inductor, from a company. Pre-production samples around March Brazilian collaborators (Zachi, etc) are trying to manufacture the air-core inductor as a contribution to HCAL  save money. For HF we could also consider a non mag-tol version (normal inductor): cheaper, higher efficiency  may save money on external LV Power Supplies.

ngCCM and control Various tests and integration of ngCCM prototype to the GLIB card has been done in UVA (S. Goadhouse). Experience useful for the HF ngCCM. One prototype being shipped to DESY. Plan : HF ngCCM design in UVA (S. Goadhouse). Redundant link: last year we had an agreement with CMS- UCSB (Magazzu, Incandela) to re-use their FF-LYNX design. But we have never received the design  extra work on the ngCCM project ? DESY (A. Campbell, etc) is increasing the effort on the portion of the control system in the counting room (uTCA "ngFEC").

QIE10 and HF RM QIE10Proto4 has been used in the testbeam last November, together with an early prototype HF RM (Fermilab, etc). Data still being analyzed by: Daryl Hare (Fermilab), Mandakini Patil (Tata Inst., India), Ted Kolberg, enrolled today (UMD). HF QIE10 was submitted in Nov 2012, expected in Feb Specifications on : Plan: HF RM design in Fermilab, at least for the QIE card (T. Shaw). Fibers driven by the Princeton TB2012 Card QIE10P4 TB2012 Card (Fermilab)

RM - FPGA Since November 2012, we have had a closer collaboration with the institutes from Rio de Janeiro (H. Nogima, A. Zachi, M. Vaz) on the FPGA design, with some pieces of code from myself. First goal: demonstrate the ability of the FPGA to receive and synchronize data from twelve QIE10 chips (each one with an unknown sampling phase). Proposal: RM FPGA in Rio (UERJ, CBPF) with my assistance.

FE FPGA: radiation (ProASIC3L FPGA) FPGA chosen for FEE: ProASIC3L from Actel/Microsemi. All features of this family have been studied under radiation except one: SLVS receiver. Started an effort to do an irradiation test (Cern, A. Kaminskiy, T.Grassi). For this purpose, CBPF (Brazil) has started to design a test card with a small FPGA of the same family.

Calibration Module (a.k.a. Calibration Unit or Calibration Box) As far as I know, nobody has taken responsibility for this item. Requirements: calibrate the PMTs by injecting Laser and LED pulses, controlled in time and amplitude self-monitoring (with PIN diodes) positioned on the FE crates

Backplane HF backplane for the upgrade to be designed by T. Shaw (Fermilab). Modification wrt to existing backplane: single slot ngCCM more room for RM strong preference to support reprogramming of the RM FPGA via the backplane, we want to same scheme for HB, HE and HF  proposal from S. Goadhouse (UVA), still under study.

Radiation on FEE and its effects Since May 2012: collaboration with Ecuadorian / US institutes (E. Carrera, F. Yumiceva + students) in order to simulate the radiation environment of the HCAL electronics. Simulation based on Fluka. First results on HF FEE presented last week [ bin/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=6031 ] bin/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=6031 Consistent with Mika's note (from 2000), but with updated details for HF. Engagement to support this effort in the future and expand it to other areas (HB, HE RBX, etc).
