DEVELOPMENT OF FOOTBALL AS A RATIONAL ACTIVITY

WE NEED TO KNOW…..  ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL – GROWTH OF AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL ASPECTS  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CROWD IN URBAN COMMUNITIES  DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AND ADMINISTRATION (TODAY)

 HOW DID FOOTBALL DEVELOP AS A RATIONAL ACTIVITY  THIS COULD BE DONE IN THE WAY OF A FLOW DIAGRAM OR MIND MAP.

 1863 – EX-PUBLIC SCHOOL BOYS FROM THE UNIVERSITIES OF OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE FORMED THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION.  BOTH RUGBY AND FOOTBALL WERE BEING PLAYED AT THIS TIME – THE RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION WAS FORMED.  SOCCER BECAME BOTH AN AMATEUR GAME FOR THE GENTLEMAN AND A PROFESSIONAL GAME FOR ‘THE PEOPLE’  IN OTHER WORDS THE WORKING CLASS.

SPECTATOR ATTRACTION..  FOOTBALL BECAME A REGULAR SPECTATOR ATTRACTION RATHER THAN AN ANNUAL FESTIVAL OCCASION  PLAYERS COULD NOT KEEP ON TAKING TIME OF WORK AND WHEN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE WAS FOUNDED IN 1888, THE FA RELUCTANTLY ACCEPTED PROFESSIONALISM.  WHY DID IT BECOME SO POPULAR?

WHY SO POPULAR…..  IT WAS A SIMPLE GAME  IT COULD BE PLAYED IN LIMITED SPACE  IT FITTED PERFECTLY INTO THE FREE SATURDAY AFTERNOON  IT PROVIDED A COMMON FOCUS FOR THE COMMUNITY – SOLIDARITY AND COMRADSHIP  IT WAS AFFORDABLE  IT WAS LOCALLY AVAILABLE  THE WORKING CLASS PROVIDED THE SPECTATORS  TRANSPORT ENABLED KEEN SUPPORTERS TO SUPPORT THEIR TEAMS IN AWAY MATCHES  FACTORY OWNERS PROVIDED FACILITIES

WAGES…..  MANY TEAMS DEVELOPED, ALMOST SPONTANEOUSLY, FROM CHURCH AND YOUTH MOVEMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, BIRMINGHAM, ASTON VILLA, EVERTON, FULHAM, BOLTON AND BARNSLEY WERE ALL ORIGINALLY CHURCH BASED.  FOR PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS IT PROVIDED IMPROVED LIFESTYLES AND REGULAR WAGES.  PRESIGE FOR GOOD PLAYERS AMONGST THE WORKING CLASS.

 DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION  SPORT DID SURVIVE THE INVENTIVENESS OF THE VICTORIANS LED TO A PERIOD OF SPORTS ‘ GENESIS’, ( MODE OF FORMATION) A HOT BED OF SPORTS DEVELOPMENT. BETWEEN 1860 AND 1890 MOST OF TODAY’S MODERN SPORTS WERE INVENTED AND RATIONALISED.

 SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCES:  INTERNATIONAL MATCH BETWEEN ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND 1870  1885 ALL HOME COUNTRIES WERE PLAYING EACH OTHER  WORKING-CLASS DOMINANCE CHANGED THE GAME  EX-PUBLIC SCHOOL BOYS WANTED TO KEEP THE AMATEUR IDEALS – THEY ESTABLISHED A TEAM OF OUTSTANDING AMATEURS CALLED ‘THE CORINTHIANS’ ( THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT ALL-ROUND GAMES PLAYER WHO ALWAYS SHOWED GREAT SPORTSMANSHIP. THE ‘CORINTHIAN SPIRIT’ IS THE IDEA OF PLAYING FAIR).  WITH THE SPREAD OF FOOTBALL ACROSS EUROPE AND THE EMPIRE, THE INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FEDERATION (FIFA) WAS FORMED IN 1904 ANDV BY 1906 PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL HAD BECOME THE MAJOR FORM OF MALE ENTERTAINMENT IN BRITAIN.

 READ P672 – 673 AND WRITE ABOUT SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS IN ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL AND RUGBY FOOTBALL GIVING PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR DEVELOPMENTS IN BOTH GAMES.

 BROKEN TIME PAYMENTS?  WHAT FACTORS HAD INFLENCED PARTICIPATION AND PERFORMANCE?  WHAT BARRIERS MIGHT PREVENT PARTICIPATION TODAY? – P72
