Introduction Fanny “Bobbie” Rosenfeld By Michael Charlery

Early Life of Bobbie Born in Ukraine Russia on December Immigrated to Canada with her parents and older brother at infancy. She grew up in Barrie. Encouraged by her family, Fanny became an enthusiastic participant in local basketball, hockey, softball, tennis and track and field. Her brother was also an outstanding athlete. He contributed significantly to have her compete on the local baseball, basketball, and hockey games. Bobbie ran and won her first race when she was a young girl attending a town picnic.

Education and Work Her Father operated a junk business with her mother whom later had 3 more girls and ran the house. Fanny attended Central School and Barrie Collegiate Institute. Worked as a stenographer at Patterson’s; a Toronto chocolate factory that sponsored her athletic deeds. Rosenfeld’s greatest athletic achievements occurred at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Brought back a Gold and Silver Medals back to Canada. Canadian Athlete of the Half-Century.

Personal Characteristics and Values Displayed a large amount of sportsmanship throughout her athletic career. She is a very enthusiastic and competitive athlete. She continued on as an athlete after the Olympics until severe arthritis attacked her 1 year later. She made a full recovery another year later. A few months after she was attacked again with arthritis which forced her retirement from active participation in Rosenfeld was honored in a variety of ways in both Toronto, Barrie and nationally

Historical Influences Rosenfeld was a superb all-round athlete who influenced Canadian women's athletics on many levels. She demonstrated the highest ideals of sportsmanship and promoted women’s sports through her writing at the Toronto Globe and Mail. Promoted and encourage women to participate and compete in sports. The decision for women to participate in the Olympics was heavily weighted on Fanny’s influence on Canadian women.
