WHAT IS COMITATUS AGAIN? An agreement between the lord and his men How do we see this in Beowulf? Hrothgar is generous with his men and provides them a vibrant mead hall Hrothgar’s men continue to follow him because of the understood agreement of comitatus Beowulf’s men join him in battle because of comitatus – they share in his glory but must also support him in return When is comitatus broken in Beowulf? When Beowulf’s men leave him to fight the dragon alone Only Wiglaf honors the comitatus
