3 Scops Traveling minstrels told the story of Beowulf for hundreds of years before it was written. Scops were on the same level as warriors

6 Epic Long narrative poem that celebrates the deeds of legendary or heroic figure.

7 Characteristics of Epic Poem 1. The hero is a great leader who is identified strongly with a particular people or society. 2. The setting is broad and often includes supernatural realms. 3. The hero does great deeds in battle or undertakes an extraordinary journey or quest.

8 Archetype A pattern that appears in literature across cultures and is repeated through the ages. Can be a character, plot, an image or setting.

9 Kenning A two-word metaphorical name for something. A clever way of renaming familiar things. EX Whale-road = sea
