Type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun.

Lunar Eclipse

Occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned exactly.

Crescent and Gibbous Crescent: Less than half of the moon is showing. Gibbous: More than half of the moon is showing.

New Moon First of a new lunar cycle.

Waxing Crescent Moon is less than half lit. Light is on the right. First half of the lunar cycle.

First Quarter Moon is half lit. Light is on the right. One quarter of the lunar cycle is done.

Waxing Gibbous More than half the moon is lit. Light is on the right.

Full Moon The whole moon is lit. Halfway through the lunar cycle.

Waning Gibbous Moon is starting to go dark again. More than half of it is lit. Light is on the left.

3 rd Quarter Half the moon is lit. Light is on the left. We are three quarters of the way through a lunar cycle.

Waning Crescent Less than half of the moon is lit. Light is on the left. Almost done with a lunar cycle.

New Moon First of a new lunar cycle.

Each cycle takes 29.5 days to complete.
