Purpose To identify the most important long-term issues that face any Nation when it comes to upgrading the competitive advantage of the national economy in the global Information and Knowledge Society

Conclusions Development of Lithuania’s KE is tightly tied with development of knowledge base for traditional industries and services Development of high-tech products within the traditional industries as well as innovations in management and technology resulting in a higher value added, must base the development of these industries In the long run Lithuania has to develop new competencies and it should be new generation of Knowledge managers

URBAN-KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY PROGRAM (WB) Four cities in the EU accession countries could form a first group to obtain WB assistance to knowledge economy work Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is chosen as allready making good use of KE activities The city level program can mesh well with what is underway in the area of KE activities at the national level The proposal: to place special effort on assisting Lithuania to develop city based knowledge economy strategy, integrated to the regional development programmes of Kaunas and other major cities
