United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Statistical Division UNECE’s experience in producing two measures of gender pay gap Work session on Gender Statistics Geneva, April 2010

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide Three measures of GPG  Difference in take home pay earned after one month of work  Overall difference in men’s and women’s position in labour market  Different pay to men and women for the same work done  GPG : One concept – many understandings (policy concerns)

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide Policy concerns and measurement of GPG Each version of GPG requires its own measurement method  Difference in take home pay => Cumulative earnings for a period of work (monthly earnings)  Overall position of women and men in labour market => Hourly wage rate  Equal pay for equal work => Hourly wage rates in comparable jobs

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide Findings

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide Findings (Cont.)  Available disaggregated earnings data in countries  Possibility to investigate more the causes of GPG

- UNECE Statistical Division Slide Conclusions  Including the GPG based on hourly data in the database broadens the understanding of GPG. UNECE will continue to update the series.  Differences noted in the earnings definitions used in countries suggest that countries make an attempt to adhere to the standards on earnings statistics.  The current GPG data are not sufficient to understand the causes of GPG. This will require data with more detailed breakdown.
