About the dialogue The dialogue of the text has been rewritten from a short story The £ 1,000, 000 Bank-note written by Mark Twain.

About the writer Mark Twain is the pen-name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens ( ), a well- known American writer and humorist. He wrote a lot of humorous stories and novels, which are quite popular with the Chinese readers.

His best known works may be: The Adventures of HuckBerry Finn, Run for the Governor, etc.. Many of his stories have been adapted to films and TV plays, of which The £ 1,000,000 Bank-note is one example.

Reading Comprehension Read the dialogue very quickly to get a general idea and then answer these questions: 1.What did the customer want? 2.How did the customer look? 3. How did the customer want to pay? He wanted to buy a suit. He looked poor and his clothes were shabby. He wanted to pay with a very large note.

Reading Comprehension Read the dialogue again with recorder and try to get as many details as possible, then answer the questions below: 1.Why did the shop assistant show the customer the cheapest suit? Because the customer looked very poor and the assistant thought he could not afford expensive clothes.

2. What did Tod really mean when he said “I know that gentleman like you carry only large notes”? 3. Why did the manager and Tod changed their attitudes( 态度 ) to the customer? 4. Why wouldn’t the customer leave his address? Poor men like you can never have large notes. They saw the million-pound banknote and believed that the customer must be a millionaire. He had no address at all because he was only a tramp( 流浪汉 )
