Natural Sciences and Technology Grade 5 Term 3: Energy and Change Cells and batteries (PPT 1)

Topic 3 Energy and Change Cells and batteries Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Cells and batteries Batteries come in different sizes A battery stores chemical energy. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Cells and batteries Batteries can start electrons flowing. Batteries are a source of electric energy. A battery, two wires and a light bulb can make an electric circuit. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Cells and batteries The current starts flowing from the battery through a wire to the light bulb. This current is known as Direct Current (DC). The other wire carries the electric current back to the battery. If you take the wire off one side of the battery, the light will not shine as you have broken the path. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Electricity Switches on an electric circuit turn the current on and off. This is how a wall switch works to turn lights on and off in your home. The electric energy in your home does not come from batteries. You plug appliances into electric outlets in your walls. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Electricity The electric energy in the outlets comes from electric power plants. This current is known as Alternating Current – AC. Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3

Electrical circuits Symbols used to represent different components in a simple circuit. battery/ open wire/ light closed cell switch conductor bulb switch Gr 5 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 3, Topic 3
