The Positive Effects of Sign Language By: Altavia Fonville

Interest in Topic? I became interested in this topic because I am hearing impaired. I started learning sign language while I was younger, even after I got my hearing aids. I can only imagine how frustrating it can be for a deaf person that can not wear hearing aids.

Research Paper -Topic: The Positive Effects of Sign Langauge -Driving question: How did Sign langauge develop into distinct language and why should it be taught to children? -Thesis Statement: There are many reasons why people should learn sign language because they can learn about culture, communication, and education.

Interesting Facts ! Sign language is a unique culture just as the Spanish and Indian culture. This is an early way of communication among young people. Sign language is not only used by deaf people. Sign language is also considered a second language. Children start to learn language after they are born and begin to make connections between what they hear and what they see.

Is ASL universal? No one form of sign language is universal. Different sign language is used in different countries and regions. Examples: British Sign Language (BSL) and French Sign Language (FSL) The signs may not be exactly the same as ASL, but you can figure out what they are trying to say.

Product For my product I created a children's sign language coloring book. For each letter of the alphabet, I drew the letter, the hand sign, and an object that begins with that letter for my coloring book. After I created the book, I did a mini lesson with the children at my church.
