WP3: Beam Transfer Challenges M.Atanasov, M.Barnes, T.Kramer, B.Goddard, P.van Trappen Special technologies

Summary All WPs are ongoing, with some delay already accumulated due to failure to find 2 PhDs in the last round. Have visited or discussed with at least 14 potential collaborators (Universities of Dundee, Manchester, Darmstadt & Strathclyde, ABB, ISEL Lisbon, Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Institute of Saint-Louis, UK Central Laser Facility, KEK, GSI, BNL, Wigner Institute,...). 3.1, solid state kicker generator (Thomas Kramer): and started on technology survey of switches and magnetic materials. Have 1 Fellow just arrived who is now starting on inductive adder design. Have also made some good progress on outlining basic system options and key parameters for injection, extraction and dilution systems. Detailed collaboration topics with KEK being finalised. 3.2, kicker magnets (Mike Barnes): waiting for new PhD for electromagnetic part, agreement with Dundee university on treatments for emissivity and SE, and studies starting on thermal design and cooling (TECH -> PhD). 3.3, septum magnets (Miro Atanasov): also delayed 6 months as no PhD identified last round. Progress on options and parameter spaces, literature survey, and identification of magnetic materials. 3.4, electronics, triggering, controls (Pieter van Trappen): some basic system level parameters defined, collaboration with R2E team for radiation resistance issues, identified laser triggering of thyristors as potential R&D direction, propose to modify the Task 2 to be more general in terms of reliability related design aspects.

3.1 Solid-state kicker generator WP leader: T.Kramer Task 1: Complete detailed proposal (objectives, timeline, identify lab space, secure resources, secure budget, and establish formal collaborations). – Tasks ongoing, exploration of possible collaboration partners was further conducted; Recent activities: visit to Strathclyde university (possible collaboration on pulsed power safety course, but funding? ), contact with power electronics group TU-Darmstadt (interested, but requests at least 80% funding by CERN whilst PhD located at university). Visit to ABB for market survey and discussion on future developments foreseen for later this year. – 1 Fellow (David Woog) arrived 01/09/2015 for inductive adder design. – Detailed proposal still to be reworked. Planning to be refined. Task 2: Study overall concepts and kicker system options, and define key parameters for FCC injection and extraction kicker generators. – Ongoing: Basic design for new segmented extraction kicker system outlined. – Work on inductive adder for injection started: Currently requirement analysis and basic system considerations ongoing. – 1 st draft of Beam Dilution kicker system design being launched (waiting for parameters on max. deflection angle/depends on bunch separation and dump design)

3.1 Solid-state kicker generator WP leader: T.Kramer Task 3: Test and select individual components (switches and magnetic materials for cores), design of the prototype: technical report of tests and measurements on materials, and design report for prototype. – Task Started; Market observations for semiconductor switches conducted. ABB visit planned later this year. Discussion on RadHard requirements launched (would possibly not allow for IGBT technology). Switch selection process started – requirements for FCC and consolidation analysed, selection process goes in hand with adder design. -> Magnet impedance to be discussed with magnet design package (launched). Awaiting possible new injection requirements (higher energy) for analysis.

3.2 Kicker magnet R&D WP leader: M.Barnes Task 1: Complete detailed proposal (objectives, timeline, identify lab space, secure resources, secure budget, and establish formal collaborations). – Ongoing: Objectives and timeline determined – however timeline needs updating as Doctoral student not taken on following TSC-1, 2015 (student identified, but his Prof. did not feel capable of being academic Supervisor): presently four interested potential Doctoral students for TSC-2. Hence timeline delayed by 6 months. Prof. R. Jones (U. of Manchester) has agreed to be academic supervisor to Doctoral student for this project. Task 2: Study overall concepts and kicker system options, and define key parameters for FCC injection kicker magnets. – Above Doctoral student to start on this in Task 3: Simulation and optimization of beam screen geometries. – Doctoral student to start this during Agreement setup with University of Dundee to study application of LESS to emissivity and SEY. Task 4: Studies to design and implement improved cooling. – Studies by Lorena Vega Sid (under umbrella of HL-LHC), will also be adapted for FCC kicker magnet. Lorena starts her PhD studies 1/11/2015.

3.3 Septum magnet R&D WP leader: M.Atansov Task 1: Complete detailed proposal (objectives, timeline, identify lab space, secure resources, secure budget, and establish formal collaborations). – Objectives and timeline defined; lab space – 867 (in radioactive WS…); resources – doctoral student opening (TE3962) – reopened for December selection board due to lack of candidates in spring – budget for that has been approved; since no suitable topology has been selected yet – no budget has yet been negotiated for prototype; only informal collaborations with BNL and GSI, Dani Barna is also negotiating with Wigner institute Task 2: Study overall concepts and septa options, and define key parameters for FCC injection and extraction septum magnets. – Work ongoing on several different threads to define the parameter space of various topologies – direct drive pulsed, massless, superconducting, superferric Lambertson, eddy current Task 3: Literature survey and design study for cross-section of SC septum. – Ongoing: Started by Dani Barna Task 4: Survey and selection of magnetic material for high-field Lambertson septum. – Ongoing: a likely candidate is ultrapure iron (for example VACOFER S1 from Vacuumschmelze); FeCo alloys are out (radiation issues), rare earths not promising due to extremely high cost and low reproducibility of magnetic properties (highly dependent on manufacturing process)

3.4 Fast electronics, triggering & controls WP leader: P.van Trappen Task 1: Review of current technologies; cooperate with other groups at CERN with radiation hardened electronics experience. – Review of current technologies ongoing with the laser triggering scheme. Retriggering and resonant charging ideas being analysed. – Discussion and cooperation started with EN-STI (Markus Brugger) and PH-DT (Mar Capeans). They will extrapolate LHC data for a first dose approximation which we will use to analyse its impact on the electronics. After we will provide a more definite dump topology (magnets, septa, TCDS/Q) they will initiate more detailed calculations. Task 2: Study and test possible solutions to mitigate degradation by radiation. Beam dump controls reliability. – As proposed and discussed in FCC Dump meeting, it would be better to generalise this task to include challenges such as modularity, fieldbus and statistical reliability studies. No progress so far.
