Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 1 * The research project has been supported by a Marie Curie Early Initial Training Network Fellowship of the European Community’s Seventh Program under contract number (PITN-GA-2010-264330- CATHI) CATHI Marie Curie Initial Training Network Cryogenics, Accelerators and Targets at HIE-ISOLDE Andrey Shornikov WP8, ER3 Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 2 Outline  Background;  Activity at CERN;  Project status and achievement;  Experience in the project;  Conclusions;

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 3 Background PhD at university of Heidelberg/MPIK (DE) Project :Electron cooler for Cryogenic Storage Ring (CSR) at MPIK (Heidelberg). Tasks: Numerical simulations of electron optics; Experiments on dense ultra-low energy electron beams; Mechanical and thermal design, applied cryogenics. Achievements: Simulation based specs for magnets; LNeon closed cycle cryogenic cooling system designed and built; Prototype HTS superconducting magnet designed and built; Cooling system and magnets put in test operation.

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 4 Activity at CERN WP8: Radioactive Ion Beam Quality Improvement / ER3:Charge breeder design study  Simulations of high current space charge limited electron beam for HIE-EBIS;  Simulation based design of High Energy Current and Compression (HEC 2 ) electron gun, drift tubes, High Power Collector (HPC) and spec for the magnetic system;  General design concept of the HIE-EBIS;

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 5 Project status and achievements after 3 months Active knowledge transfer:  Visited best performing relevant EBIT/S groups at MPIK, BNL, MSU/NSCL.  Preliminary agreement on collaborative construction of the HEC 2 gun with BNL, getting approval at CERN. If approved and funded the gun can be built and tested within the 2 years WP*.  HIE-EBIS wide board workshop** with attendance of 28 on 16-17.10 to discuss the options and get feedback from CERN and external experts * Goes beyond WP **CATHI sponsored

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 6 Project status and achievements after 3 months

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 7 Outlook and options  The gun HEC 2 will be built and experimentally tested at BNL EBTS facility *  HPC and drift tube structure will be designed adopting BNL/ANL scheme to a detailed phase.  Simulation based specs for the magnet and general design concept of the HIE-EBIS will be elaborated  The HEC 2 gun will be modeled and designed  HPC and the drift tube structure will be simulated and designed to the first order.  Simulation based specs for the magnet and general design concept of the HIE-EBIS will be elaborated VS.

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 8 Experience in the project Trainings and personal development  Learning from best performing EBIT/S groups  Intensive training in COMSOL to utilize multiphysics approach in design (Sep 12)  CERN Accelerator School to extend accelerator physics background (Oct 12)

Mid Term Review Meeting, 26 September 2012A. Shornikov 9 Conclusion Keeping up with the plan  Trainings: according to the CDP (COMSOL taken, CAS – registered Oct, French - registered Oct)  Milestones: M41 first one to be delivered by mid October (HIE-EBIS WS)  Deliverables: according to the plan  Meetings (CERN TE-MSC, TE-VSC, MPIK), secondments (BNL, MSU/NSCL) : according to the CDP.  Conferences: EMIS 2012 registered according to the CDP.  Networking/collaboration: if approved the HEC 2 collaboration with BNL profits both the ER3 and the HIE-EBIS project by more effective use of resources, saving time, working with and learning from the best specialists using the unique facility.
