Warm Up 1.The perimeter of the figure below is 24. What is the length of side A? 2. Charlie Brown’s tree house is 16 feet long and 10 feet wide. His secret hideout is half the length and half the width of his tree house. What is the total area of Charlie Brown’s tree house AND Secret hideout? 3. Snoopy needs 80 dog bones for his Thanksgiving feast. The dog bones come in packages of 6. How many packages does he need to buy? 4. Woodstock ed his friend the number of pies at their Thanksgiving Feast. Then he multiplied the number by 9 and subtracted 2 from the product. The result was 25. What was the number of pie’s at Woodstock’s Feast? A B

 Practicing Place value  I will read a number out loud. You must write the number down correctly in standard and word form.  What is 40 more than this number?  What is 400 more than this number?  What is 10 less than this number?

 In Class, we planned a class road trip together, and figured out how many miles we would drive if we actually went on the trip.  Here is a road trip that I have planned. I really like to drive, so I’m going to go from Boston to Seattle, which is 3,046 miles. On my way back to Boston, I’m going to visit Nashville. That’s 2,450 miles from Seattle. Then I’ll head back to Boston, which is 1,154 miles.  Can anyone tell me what equation I will need to figure out how many miles my trip will be?

3, , ,154 = Since these numbers are pretty large, is there a way to make this problem easier to solve? Talk with a partner about how you could solve this problem mentally.

3, , ,154 = One way to make this problem easier would be to break the numbers apart into more manageable numbers. You may have broke the numbers apart by place value and add. Another way, is to recombine numbers in any order to get the sum. For example, in this problem, it makes sense to add the two 50s, to add the 4 (from 54) to 46 to make another 50 or add 154 and 46 to make 200. Large numbers often create an opportunity to combine more than on strategy. In this problem, it is easy to add the thousands separately from the rest of the problem and then think about whether to continue to break the numbers apart by place or use adding-on strategies (154+46=200; = 650).

Center A- Plan another road trip. You can visit as many cities along the way, as you would like. Your group will have some charts for you to look up the distance between cities. (Directions on Next Slide) Center B-Close to 1000 (Introduced in 11/13 plans)

1.Use the map to plan your road trip. 2.Then, use the data table to find the mileage between each place. 3.Complete the information on Worksheet below.

 What addition strategies are helpful for you?  Why could we change and break apart numbers in the addition problem today?  Addition & Subtraction Assessment
