The Art of Delegation

Meet Your Facilitator

Words of Wisdom “Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.” - General George S. Patton, Jr.

Agenda The basics The challenges A model for delegation– The Five Steps Case study evaluation Share ideas and best practices

The Basics What is delegation? Why do it? “Giving of responsibility to someone else: Responsibility” “accountability (explaining); blame; authority to make decisions independently.” Think of a current situation where you are delegating work, or an area where you are considering delegating work…

The Challenges What is your current challenge in delegation? What makes delegation difficult? The challenges that we face in delegation are not due to a lack of management tools, but usually it’s because we struggle with the leadership aspects of it.

It’s not about YOU... it’s about YOUR PEOPLE Leadership 101 Perspectives Leadership 101 It’s not about YOU... it’s about YOUR PEOPLE You’ve got to meet the needs of your people. When work is delegated to you, what needs must be met by the delegator?

The Five Steps 1. Know what you want, and know yourself 2. Trust others to do the job 3. Ask people for their help 4. Let go of the “how,” and follow up on the “what” and “when” 5. Celebrate the accomplishments of your team

The assignment…

Case Study Questions for consideration 1) In one sentence, describe why your assigned step (refer to handout “Five Steps of Delegation”) is the most critical step in the process of delegation that you will follow in this situation. 3) What are some actions that you might take? 4) What actions related to this step have you taken in the past? Which were successful, and which were not? What lessons did you learn from them? 5) What are your top five tips for executing this step? These must be specific actions that someone could take right now. 6) What could you do to make this step more of a habit than a forced process?

Wrap-Up What did you learn? What will you do next week?

What questions can I answer for you?
