TDWG Annual Meeting Outreach and Capacity Building Work Program Beatriz Torres October 2002, Indaiatuba, Brazil

Outreach (users and providers)  Scientific community  Conservation organizations  General public  Policy and decision makers

Outreach: Main components  Develop strategies to increase awareness and gain visibility of GBIF (contributing to key thematic and highly visible events i.e. Convention on Biological Diversity, IUCN Protected Areas Congress).  Plan to increase GBIF membership

Institutional Capacity Building  Working with nodes to provide connectivity, sharing technologies, new developments,...  Leverage (identification of other efforts) and forging of synergies. Capacity Building

Human Capacity Building Support to National Nodes  Define best practices  Identify institutional and human capacity building gaps  Develop training courses for node development covering on i.e: (a) software packages, (b) standards and protocols (c) information management and networking

ECAT  Support the production of regional checklists (facilitate agreements and MOUs, identify key partners and organizations)  Assist ECAT efforts to populate databases (i.e. dissemination of standards and formats)

DIGITISATION  Support elaboration of best practices handbook  Assessment of training needs (2002)  2 pilot projects  2 training modules (staff and scientists)  Training of trainers (2004)

DADI  Develop ”proof of concept products” (i.e. demonstrative, useful and scalable pilots)  Implement products  Monitor usage and evaluate impact

Other key issues

Repatriation of data and information  International community assigns great importance to this topic.  Leading role to be played by GBIF (visibility and international recognition)  Contribution to the implementation of CBD (Art on Exchange of information)

Repatriation … Within a framework of training and scientific and technical cooperation  Facilitate scientific exchanges (i.e. between biodiversity- rich countries and large collection-based facilities).  Development of agreements/MoUs  Pilots to provide hands-on training and experience on digitization of collections and how to use the recently acquired data  Analyze existing experiences and approaches (white paper)  Small experts´ Workshop (Dec 2003)

Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs)  White paper(s) on i.e IPRs vis a vis data ownership, will explore existing experiences and approaches, …  Experts´workshop (Dec. 2003)
