Pavel Katenin Pavel Katenin lived not far from the town of Kologriv in the ancient manorial estate Shaevo. He was born here on 22 December 1792 in the noble family. His parents were very educated people and gave his son well rounded education so being a child he could speak several foreign languages. This couldn’t but influence him in his choice of the future occupation. At first he served in the army. Being a military man he got acquainted with A. Pushkin and became his friend. Later on he was sent back to his estate for his political where he started his literary activities. Firstly he started to translate foreign books and then began to write his own poems in which he described the life of local people. In Kologriv there is the house where Pavel Katenin used to live. It’s a state office now.

Ephim Chestnyakov E. Chestnyakov was born not far from this place in the village of Shablovo on 19 (31) December His father was a peasant and he graduated from the local school and then studied at the theological seminary. Later on he worked as a teacher. From 1899 till 1905 he studied in St Petersburg and his teachers were I. Repin and D. Shcherbinovski then he continued his education as an artist in the Academy of arts. In 1914 he published a book of his fairy tales “The Magic Apple”. The book was illustrated with his own drawings. In the same year he came back to his native village where he lived all his life. E. Chestnyakov was the author of many pictures, drawings, small sculptures made from clay. They were exhibited in many cities of Russia and abroad. He also wrote a novel, some stories, plays and poems.

Ivan Kasatkin Not far from the highway Kologriv. Manturovo there is a village called Baranovitsa. There are only 20 houses left here. A well known writer Ivan Kasatkin used to live here. In his works he wrote about one of the most difficult periods in the history of this county, the period after the Great October revolution. The main topic of his works is the life of Russian peasants. In 1924 he opened the reading house in the Kostroma region which was packed with books brought from Moscow by him. He knew M. Gorki and they wrote letters to each other. Staying in this village I put another mark on my map.

Tatyana Inosemtseva 1950-н.в. A well known poet Tatyana Inosemtseva was born on 24 January 1950 in the village of Yakshanga which is located not far from Manturovo near the Transsiberian highway. She was brought up in the local orphanage and studied in the boarding school in the Ivanovskoe village of the Sharya district. Having graduated from the secondary school she entered the agricultural collage in Galych and worked as an agronomist. Later on she graduated from the agricultural institute in Karavaevoand then worked as an economist in one of state agricultural enterprises in the Parfnievo district. Her first poems were published in 1964 in the local newspaper and her first book of poems was published in1977. Tatyana Inosemtseva was a participant of the 6th and 7th meetings of young writers of the former Soviet Union and was awarded several rewards for her literary activity and for her books “ The Tillage” and “The Wild Apple Tree”. She still lives and works in Parfenievo and has been the member of the union of the writers of Russia since In her poems and stories she writes about the life of her fellow-villagers and the love towards her motherland.

Alexander Ostrovski He got his estate in Shchelykovo in 1867 when together with his brother they bought it from their step-mother but he had started going there still earlier since He lived there since March till September or even October. Shchelykovo is the place where Ostrovski wrote a lot of his plays. The most famous among them are “The Snow Maiden”, “The Wood”, “The voivode” and many others. The history of the Kostroma drama theatre is closely connected with the name of Ostrovski who used to visit it and where his play were staged.

Julia Zhadovskaya Julia Zhadovskaya was born in the village of Subbotino not far from Yaroslavl but then she lived and died in the village of Tolstikovo not far from Kostroma. She is famous for her poems and novels which were published in literary magazines in the first half and in the middle of the 19th century. She used to know such outstanding writers as Turgenev, Aksakov and others.

Alexsei Pisemski He graduated from the Kostroma gymnasium and later studied at the university. He started to publish his works in His most popular novels are “The Rich Fiancé”, the autobiographical novel “The Boyars”. He was in correspondence with Nekrasov.
