CHAPTER 2 WE ALL LIVE TOGETHER LESSON 1 AMERICANS ALL

FOCUS ON THE MAIN IDEA: The United States is a diverse nation made up of people from different backgrounds and cultures.

PLACES: PEOPLE: Bering Strait Mississippi River Louisiana Territory Christopher Columbus Thomas Jefferson Meriwether Lewis Lewis Clark

VOCABULARY WORDS: immigrant-a person who comes to live in a new land. culture- a way of life followed by a group of people.

IMPORTANT DATES: 1492- Columbus arrives in North America. 1803-The United States purchases the Louisiana Territory from France. 1819-The United States purchases Florida from Spain. 1845- Texas becomes a state. 1853- The area that is to become 48 of the 50 states is complete.

THE EARLIEST AMERICANS P. 39 What are some different ideas scientist have about where the first Americans came from?

EXPLORERS FROM EUROPE: Columbus’s voyages opened up a great age of exploration. European explorers came to the Americas in search of gold and other riches. These explorers also wanted to claim land for their rulers. 1513-Juan Ponce de Leon landed in what is now Florida. He didn’t find any gold. 1539-Hernando de Soto also landed in Florida.

MORE EUROPEAN EXPLORERS: 1534-Jacques Cartier came in search of riches. 1673- Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet-wanted to bring Christianity to the Americas. They also explored the Mississippi River. Robert La Salle- traveled the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed land for France.

THE UNITED STATES GROWS: By the early 1700s, the Atlantic coast had many settlers. By 1783, the U.S. claimed land from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River. In 1803, the French sold land that was then called the Louisiana Territory to the U.S. Included much of the land west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.

LEWIS AND CLARK In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on an expedition to discover what was on the land that had been purchased. 1803-1853, the U.S. continued to expand. Through treaties, purchases, and wars, new territory was added. 1819-U.S. purchased Florida from Spain 1845- Texas was added to the U.S. 1853-more land was purchased.

REVIEW QUESTION: List some of the ways the United States grew from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

IMMIGRATION/CULTURAL RICHES Immigrants have continued to come to the U.S. throughout its history. Not all the people who came to the U.S. had a choice. Many Africans were forced to come. Many things make up a group’s culture; food, clothing, music, art, religion, holidays, customs, language, and stories are a few.

OUT OF MANY, ONE “E pluribus unum” is our country’s motto. It is Latin and means “out of many, one.” You can see this motto on our coins. out of many states becomes one nation. Out of many different backgrounds, comes one people, united as a nation.

LESSON SUMMARY Pre-1492 * Native American groups lived in North America for centuries. 1492 * Columbus arrived in North America. Many more Europeans explorers followed. 1803-1853 * The United States grew with the addition of new lands. Today * People continue to come to America from all over the world.

CRITICAL THINKING: Making Decisions Suppose you live in a different country. What might make you decide to move to the United States? (Write a paragraph describing at least three reasons why you would move to the U.S.)
