Global Sept 2015 EQ: How did the foundations of Civilization (Prehistory–3000 B.C.E.) help create our modern society? LO: wwbat assess the beginnings of civilization and its impact on modern society. Do Now: Why did ending a nomadic life lead to modern cities like NYC?

1 Eight aspects of civilization - cities, government, religions, job specialization, social classes, arts/architecture, public works, and writing. civilization = complex highly organized social order. Nomads did not have complex societies.

2 The expansion into territory beyond the boundaries of a city created a city-state. An empire is a group of states or territories controlled by one ruler. City people were ranked according to their jobs, which led to the growth of social classes. Artisans were skilled craftspeople

3 Cultural diffusion - spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another. Interaction among the various civilizations often brought about cultural change. Nomadic herders crossed the dry grasslands called steppes. Pictographs - simple drawings of the objects they represented. As writing became more complex it could only be done by scribes

Exit ticket Why did cultural difussion play an important role in the rise of civilizations?
