The New Durham Cemetery Trustees are providing this presentation on todays cost and options available when a loss occurs. We are not endorsing any vendor or method of interment. In most instances a funeral will be the second most costly event in ones lifetime. Always get a copy of the cemetery by laws before you purchase a plot. It is prudent to plan well in advance of a loss. Negotiate price, and shop for services offered. Research your options when clear headed, and not under duress. We are most vulnerable when a loss occurs. (Pre Need with a funeral director can be an option for locking in current rates. However; paying well in advance for services rendered must be carefully considered, as a vendor may not exist in the future. In this presentation we are limiting the number of vendor, and surrounding towns for the sake of brevity. However; should you choose a different location in NH you will find the costs a current base line. It is wise to always to shop and negotiate for price. The Shirley Cemetery does not offer the option of a columbarium( storage niches for cremated remains.) but we are exploring the feasibility of an ash garden, and memorial wall that will substantially reduce the cost of interments. Alton is currently in the process of providing columbarium's. Prices can vary but a columbarium niche in Concord is $2600.

History of Shirley Cemetery The Shirley Cemetery land was left to the town of New Durham in 1999 by John J. Shirley and thus named after him for his generosity. The cemetery area is approximately. 1 acre. Additional land was added by the town in 2012. All past and present residents are entitled to purchase plots whether or not they currently live in New Durham.

Shirley Cemetery Costs The cost of a 4x10 ft. plot is $500 Opening and closing a grave is $300 during business hours and $50 per hr. overtime. The Shirley allows 1 casket and 1 urn per family plot or 4 urns per family plot.

Alton Cemetery Unlike the Shirley Cemetery that limits its plots to New Durham residents and relatives past and present, The Alton Cemeteries are a public facility and anyone can purchase a plot. The cost of a plot is $600 to $800. Openings are $600 Monday thru Friday, and Saturdays are $900. Alton allows 6 cremation urns in one full burial (casket) plot. The cost to open only cremation plots are $350 on weekdays and $550 on Saturdays
