Unit 1.5 – 1.6

Unit 1 – Algebra: Linear Functions  1.5 – Find Slope and Rate of Change  Georgia Performance Standard:  MM1A1g – Explore rates of change, comparing constant rates of change versus variable rates of change. Compare rates of change of linear, quadratic, square root, and other function families.

Vocabulary  Slope  Rise/Run  Rate of change  Compares a change in one quantity to a change in another quantity.

Different Slopes… Positive Slope:Negative Slope:

Different Slopes… Horizontal Line:Vertical line: “0”Undefined

Try These…  Page 25: 4 - 7

So what’s the deal with slope anyways?  Slope  Rise/Run Find the slope of the line that passes through the points: (-4,-1) and (5,9) -Page 25:

Unit 1 – Algebra: Linear Functions  1.6 – Graph Using Slope-Intercept Form  Georgia Performance Standard:  MM1A1d- Investigate and explain the characteristics of a function: domain, range, zeros, intercepts, intervals of increase and decrease, maximum and minimum values, and end behavior.

Vocabulary  Slope-intercept form  y= mx + b  m = slope  b = y-intercept (Where you start on the graph)  Parallel  Two lines that do not intersect. They have the same slope. (Never cross)  Perpendicular  Two lines that intersect to form a right triangle. They have slopes that are negative reciprocals (opposites)
