Parallel Lines Lines are parallel if they have the same slope.
Parallel lines - lines in the same plane that never intersect Graph the following questions on the same graph y = -3x +4 6x + 2y = -10 Lines are parallel if they have the same slope.
2
~slopes of the lines are "negative reciprocals"
Perpendicular Lines Perpendicular lines - lines in the same plane that intersect to form a right angle Graph the following questions on the same graph 3y = 9x + 3 6y +2x = 6 Perpendicular lines and Slope: ~slopes of the lines are "negative reciprocals" - opposite signs and reciprocals ~ also the product of the slopes is -1
3
Determine if the lines are parallel, perpendicular or
neither.
1.) 3x - y = -5 and 5y - 15x = 10 2.) 4y = -12x + 16 and y = 3x + 4 3.) 2y - x = 2 and 8x + 4y -2 =0
4
Write an equation of the line that is parallel to the given
line and passes through the given point.
1.) y = 5x + 2 (3,2) - has the same slope - use y = mx +b to find the y-intercept 2.) y= -2x -1 (2,6)
5
- the slope is the opposite of the reciprocal
Write an equation of the line that is perpendicular to the
given line and passes through the given point. 3.) y = -3x + 9 (3,1) - the slope is the opposite of the reciprocal - use y = mx +b to find the y-intercept 4.) y = -3x + 1 and passes through the point (4, 2).
