Los Alisos Intermediate School 7 th Grade Physical Education

 Modern Ice Hockey was developed in Montreal, Canada with the first organized game in  James Creighton is the “father of ice hockey” and was one of the men to play with his friends during the first organized game.  In the first ice hockey game, each team had 9 players, the goals were 8 feet wide and they used a flat, circular piece of wood as the puck.

 1883: The first “world championship” of hockey was held in Montreal, Canada  1892: Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley, purchased a silver bowl to use as a trophy for the winner of the championship  Today: Trophy continues to be used and is known as the Stanley Cup, awarded to the champion of the NHL each year.

 1896: First Hockey league formed in the United States  1917: National Hockey Association (Canadian teams only) was reorganized to include U.S. teams and named the National Hockey League (NHL)  1924: First Olympic games with Men’s Ice Hockey (Gold: Canada, Silver: United States, Bronze: Great Britain)  1960: U.S. Men’s Hockey Team wins first Gold Medal  1998: First Olympic Games with Women’s Ice Hockey (Gold: United States, Silver: Canada, Bronze: Finland)

 The objective of the game is to score goals by shooting a puck into the opponent’s net  The team that scores the most goals during the game wins

 The main job of the offense is to work together to score goals  Offensive Positions  Right Wing ▪ Mainly on the right side of the ice ▪ Must be able to battle for the puck in front of the net  Center ▪ Creative player, much like a quarterback. Must be good at passing and making smart plays  Left Wing ▪ Traditionally shoots with left-handed shot ▪ Mainly on the left side of the ice

 The main job of the defense is to work together to STOP the other team from scoring  Defensive Positions:  Right Defenseman ▪ Plays primarily on the right side of the ice, defending the Left Wing of the other team  Left Defenseman ▪ Plays primarily on the left side of the ice, defending the Right Wing of the other team  Goalie ▪ Plays in front of the goal and has the job of keeping the puck from going into the net

 Goal  Puck  Stick

 Foot Hockey is played on a hard surface (Los Alisos plays on the basketball courts)  In a typical game, there are 6 players on each team (3 offensive players, 2 defensive players and a goalie)  Players can use their sticks to pass the puck to teammates  Players can use their sticks to shoot the puck into the opposing team’s net

 Players may not hold the puck in their hands  Players must use ONLY their stick to redirect the puck (do not use feet to kick the puck)  If puck goes out of bounds (sidelines/endlines), the play is stopped and the other team gets the puck to pass back in bounds.  Players must hold onto the hockey stick with two hands  Hockey stick can not move upward above the knee  Play is stopped if the goal is knocked out of position

 When a penalty occurs, the player that committed the penalty goes into the penalty box (that team must play with one less player)  Some Penalties Include:  Tripping  Elbowing  High-Sticking  Delay of Game  Slashing  Unsportsmanlike Conduct

 Demonstrates Reliability  Communicates Constructively  Listens Actively  Is an Active Participant  Makes their Teammates Better  Shows Commitment  Treats others in a respectful and supportive manner  Holds other teammates accountable
