Symbolism a person, place or object which has a meaning in itself but suggests other meanings as well things, characters and actions can be symbols some symbols mean the same thing to all readers.

Symbolism As you read literature think about what items are being used over and over again. Look for a hidden meaning to these items.

Read the following excerpt and determine what symbol is used. Look at the diction of the piece and determine the mood using connotation clues to help you.
