Plant Quarantine Diego Martin North Secondary School

What is a Plant Quarantine A quarantine is used to separate and restrict the movement of persons; it is a 'state of enforced isolation'. This is often used in connection to disease and illness, such as those who may possibly have been exposed to a communicable disease A Plant Quarantine is the first line of defence against the introduction and possible establishment of exotic plant pests and diseases

Plant Quarantine

Plant quarantine is a technique and process done by countries for insuring diseases and pest-free plants can enter the country. This is done by isolating them during a period while performing tests for the presence of problems.

Why do we quarantine? To prevent the entry of pest and diseases into our country, that can enter through our ports and airports The quarantine of imported and exported plants and plant products. Weeds are used to prevent soil erosion Some weeds are used for as ornamentals and flowers

Main responsibilities of Plant Quarantine  The quarantine of imported and exported plants and plant products.  Isolation quarantine of the designated plants and plant products  On-site inspection and quarantine in exporting country

The Plant Quarantine Service of T&T The Plant Quarantine Service provides the first line of defense in pest surveillance that is, preventing the entry of pest into Trinidad and Tobago. It protects Trinidad and Tobago’s borders from the invasion of pests and diseases by the issuing of import permits, inspection of import/export cargo and baggage at ports of entry, seizures of import/export cargo and baggage and the execution of post-entry inspections. Suspicious materials are intercepted and sent to the Entomology and Plant Pathology Diagnostic Laboratories for testing before conditional release or destruction. Plant material is also screened at the glasshouse before destruction or conditional release. Imports found to contravene the Plant Protection Act 13 of 1975 are seized and destroyed.

Plant material is also screened at the glasshouse before destruction or conditional release. Imports found to contravene the Plant Protection Act 13 of 1975 are seized and destroyed. This unit is also involved in:  Surveillance for early detection of exotic fruit flies of plant quarantine importance;  Compiling the Regulated Pest List for Trinidad and Tobago; and  Ensuring compliance with the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures. Inspections and audits of farms certified treatment operators are conducted to verify compliance with (ISPM #15) - Guidelines for regulating wood packaging material in International Trade. Certification of farms as outlined in the farm certification protocol in accord with the Barbados/Trinidad and Tobago Agricultural Trade Protocol of 2001.
