An Introduction

 What is a Sruth Lán-Ghaeilge?  A Sruth Lán-Ghaeilge (Irish-medium Stream) is a limited provision of tuition through the medium of Irish, within a parent school where English is the language of communication and teaching language of the school.  What is an Aonad Lán-Ghaeilge?  An Aonad Lán-Ghaeilge (Irish-medium Unit) is a linguistic unit in which students are immersed in Irish from the beginning to the end of the school day. The Aonad operates within a parent school where English is the language of communication and teaching language of the school. The Aonad is similar to a small school, organised and run through a minority language while the parent school is run through the everyday language of the community.

 To Junior Certificate  Students can enrol to be taught their core subjects through Irish, including, Maths, History, Geography, Science, PE, RE, SPHE, and CSPE,  English/French/German will be taught through the target language.  Students can choose two other optional subjects such as Art; Business Studies; Chinese; Computers; Home Economics; Music; Technical Graphics; Woodwork; and Metalwork; through English alongside the mainstream students.

 Ard Scoil Rís - oldest  Gorey Community School, Wexford - newest  Colaiste Choilm, Cork – largest  Maynoth Post Primary (to 2014) – nearest

 Some local families are sending their children to different second level schools because we do not provide a Lán Ghaeilge option. Approached by parents and teachers about offering an Irish stream.  We feel that the addition of the Sruth and its students provides a new and exciting dimension to an already established school, something that can benefit students learning Irish at all levels and in all year groups.  The opening of the Sruth gives an extra option to parents’ of children in Gaelscoileanna in deciding on their children’s 2 nd level education.  As a community school we believe that we should, to the best of our capacity, offer education opportunities to all children in our area.  Some students opt not to continue to Gael Cholaiste.

 These are a max of 24 additional places in 1 st year in the Sruth.  The non-Sruth will continue to offer 140 places to 1 st year students.  A waiting list for places of approx 80 for last 2 years – these students not securing places in the school.  Students from local Gaelscoileanna in Band 4 and Band 5 of admissions policy.

 There is a demand for places in Irish medium 2 nd level schools.  Confey College has now capacity to deliver the core curriculum.
