Policy Paper and Outcome Metrics Melissa A. Kenney, Leonard Nurse, Betsy Albright, Maya Buchanan, Ainsley Lloyd, Ariana Sutton-Grier, Kim Penn, Sean Townsend, John Post, Yaser Abunnasr, Robert Walker Objective(s) and Primary Outcome(s): –To understand the flexibility in existing policies, incentives, or disincentives for employing holistic coastal resilience strategies –To develop resilience indicators that are useful for assessing the state of resilience and for informing resilience planning decisions (this is not a priority for this year) –Development of peer-reviewed manuscripts, development of indicator that is tested with potential user communities What we’ve accomplished –Sent to get started –Pulling together information from Jamaica presentations –Kenney’s research team is developing an indicator synthesis that will have some utility for supporting the outcome metrics work

Funding – Undergraduates Don DeGroot, Thomas Sheahan, Elisabeth Hamin, Robert Ryan Objective and Primary Outcome: – obtain funding to support undergraduate students to participate in the SAGE network and in particular to work on case studies (e.g., student exchanges to gather data at Northeast vs. Caribbean sites) – focus primarily (to start) on looking at funding opportunities from National Science Foundation (e.g., supplemental funding for RCN, REU Site, …). NSF supplemental funding is generally easy to get (up to 20% of budget and no peer review, i.e., up to Program Manager) What we’ve accomplished – June 2015: Contacted NSF RCN Program Manager who said would not support a supplemental funding request because RCN SEES program is being discontinued. – June 2015: Contacted Richard J. Fragaszy (NSF Cluster Leader, Resilient & Sustainable Infrastructure and Program Manager Geotechnical Engineering) – said would consider request but contact him in October 2015

FUNDING -- NOAA Hamin and Kirshen along with 2 non-SAGE resource economists put in proposal for Coastal Resiliency grant (July 2015) Would fund case studies + field experiment in participatory community resilience planning 30+ pages with NOAA partners and east coast communities Can seek other venues for this idea

Funding – Undergraduates Don DeGroot, Thomas Sheahan, Elisabeth Hamin, Robert Ryan Future Plans: – Contact NSF's Richard Fragaszy in October 2015 about RCN supplement funding request. – Consider submitting NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site proposal (NSF ). Deadline is typically end of August. It will require a significant amount of work to prepare such a proposal. – Contact NSF's International Programs office – Search for other (non- NSF) undergraduate/graduate education and research funding opportunities

Statement of Expertise Don De Groot, Pamela Patrick, Fernando Gilbes, and Yaser Abunnasr Objective: – prepare a Statement of Expertise document that describes the expertise, experience and activities of all the SAGE network members – purpose is to provide a single, standalone document (PDF) that can be used 1) as a resource by SAGE members (e.g., when preparing proposals), 2) as a "marketing tool" when contacting other organizations and non-traditional funding sources (e.g., private foundations, World Bank, reinsurance companies), and 3) to track collaborations among SAGE members that have resulted from the network What we’ve accomplished – Prepared a draft questionnaire to send to SAGE members requesting information

Statement of Expertise Don De Groot, Pamela Patrick, Fernando Gilbes, and Yaser Abunnasr Future Plans: – Draft format/content for Statement of Expertise document; send out for comments (Oct 2015). – Finalize expertise questionnaire and send to SAGE members (Nov 2015). – Complete Statement of Expertise document (end of Dec 2015)

Local Case Studies Chair Robert Ryan Members: Yaser Abunnasr, John Duff, Jim Kosteras, Rob Walker, Fernando Gilbes, Paul Kirshen, Rob Pirani, Robert Weiss, Elisabeth Albright, John Post, Leonard Nurse, John Charlery. Objectives/ Goals 1.Develop a case study methodology for coastal climate change adaptation. 2.Develop pilot study case studies from Northeast US and Carribbean. Work to Date 1.Phone Conference Call 9/17/15 2.Review summary of notes from Jamaica workshop. 3.Review of draft case study form developed by Elis. Hamin. 4.Living Shoreline case study data base from Rob Walker. 5.Develop pilot study case studies from Northeast US and Carribbean

Outcomes/ Future Plans 1.Discussed need for clearer objectives for case studies (Elis to help develop). 2.Need to determine audience- ex. Policy makers, leaders, less for academics. 3.Need to develop a methodology that fulfills clearer objectives. 4.Need for criteria for choosing case studies: Built projects, hybrid/green solutions, scale issues. Future plans and proposed milestones 1.Conf. call to be scheduled. 2.Seek information on potential case studies. 3.Liaison with Elisbeth’s RA on the project.
