Microscopes

Microscopes Microscope can be divided into two words. Scope – means to look Micro - means small This is an inquiry tool used to make an object appear larger.

Microscopes Lens in a microscope are curved and can make an object appear larger. The early scientist called the curved glass a lens because it looked like a lentil! A lentil is a bean!! Van Anton Van Leeuvenhoek was the first scientist to see microscopic organisms.

Microscopes The 5 main parts of a microscope Base - supports the microscope. It holds a lamp or mirror that shines light through object Stage – holds the slide or object to view Adjustment Knob – helps you to focus the lenses

Microscopes Nose piece – Holds one or more lenses that can magnify an object up to 400 times. Eyepiece – contains one lens and is mounted at the end of tube.

Microscopes Important Questions! 1. How did the lens get its name? 2. What did van Leeuwenhoek see with his microscope? 3. Who was the first person to use the word cell to refer to the units found in living things? 4. As you look through a microscope what path does the light take before it reaches your eye? 5. If you put a pebble on the microscope stage, could you see what’s inside the pebble? Explain.
