The 3 Part Lesson Model

Problem Solving Application Teacher Directed Lesson Practise The Traditional Approach: Probably what your math class looked like. Problem Solving Application

Calculate Determine Find …and SOLVE Math Quest and Journeys. A few “story problems” were added to the bottom of the page but they weren’t problems to solve because they followed 40 questions on a particular procedure, and generally contained only two numbers. Students didn’t have to read the question, reason mathematically or think in order to arrive at a solution.

A Problem-Based Approach Teacher Facilitated Sharing Problem Solving Scenario Activity & Conversation A Problem-Based Approach Each lesson is structured with a focus on problem solving. Students actively “do” mathematics. There is opportunity to share and discuss mathematics. Clarify - Refine - Practise - Apply

Three part lesson model Getting Ready Activate prior knowledge Present the problem Be sure expectations are clear Before Three part lesson model During Students Work Let go! Listen carefully Observe and Assess Page 132 Book B- Multiplication Lesson 1 Explaining the Explore After Class Discourse Accept student solutions with interest, yet neutrality Conduct discussion as students justify and evaluate results
