According to the Canada Council for the Arts, arts and culture are essential elements in the new global economy – not only for their entertainment value but also for the skills they develop in individuals. For example, an arts education challenges people to think critically and to solve problems creatively – skills that are now in high demand. During the 1990s, the culture sector labour force grew by 31 per cent, compared to a growth rate of 20 per cent for Canada’s labour force as a whole. Arts and Culture

Markham has created a vision for culture as: an integral part of the community; a way to celebrate cultural diversity; and a means to contribute to its economic strength

Eight Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits Six sector recognized certifications and training (3 compulsory and 3 electives) Experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector “Reach ahead” experiences in the area of the student’s post-secondary destination The use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) for purposes of documentation of essential skills achieved

A minimum of 2 cooperative education credits linked to the major credits are required. Job shadowing, job twinning, work experience and virtual work experience are recommended.

- one-on-one observation of a cooperative education student at a placement in the arts and culture sector (job twinning) - a day-long observation of an artist (job shadowing) - a one- or two-week work experience with a member of an industry association or a professional in the sector (example of work experience) - Participation in a local, provincial, or national competition focused on one of the arts, - Attendance at a sector trade show, conference, symposium or job fair - A tour of a local theatre, museum, studio or art gallery

Community and industry partner activities such as career talks, facility tours, mentorship programs and skills demonstrations or competitions are encouraged Visits to post secondary institutions or training facilities
