Analyze the Characteristics of Different Forms of Poetry

Anticipatory Set

Literary Response 8.3.1: Determine and articulate the relationship between the purposes and characteristics of different forms of poetry (e.g., ballad, lyric, couplet, epic, ode, sonnet).

poetry: has a musical quality. The arrangement of words into a rhythmic pattern and the use of rhyme help create this quality.

Poetry expresses strong emotions. When you read a poem, you often think, “I’ve felt this way, too!” Poetry is packed with meaning, or insight into life.

Forms of poetry: Narrative poetry: tells a story. It has many of the same elements of a short story: plot, characters, setting, dialogue, conflict.

Forms of poetry: Epic: An epic is a long narrative poem that tells of heroic deeds of a larger than life character. It usually reveals the traditions and values of the culture or society that created it.

Forms of poetry: Ballad: a story told in song form. Since they were passed down by word of mouth from person to person, the words are simple and have a strong beat. Traditional ballads come out of the oral tradition and were sung by balladeers who traveled the country. Usually the author is anonymous.

Forms of poetry: Lyric Poetry: usually short that express strong feelings, usually about something in nature, people, animals, or things. They have a musical quality.

Forms of poetry: couplet: a pair of lines that have the same length, and also rhyme.

Forms of poetry: elegy: poem of mourning that expresses sadness for the death of a person or animal, or the loss of an object or value. The tone is grave and somber.

Forms of poetry: ode: a long lyric poem on a serious subject. Usually contains lofty language and a dignified style and is addressed to another person or thing.

Forms of poetry: sonnet: a very definite form; fourteen lined with a fixed meter and rhyme scheme. Usually, it expresses a single theme or idea.
