SENIOR DESIGN 1 FALL 2015 HOME SECURITY SYSTEM [1]

TEAM MEMBERS Daniel McKinnon Team Leader Electrical Engineer Richard Stone Electrical Engineer Sam Scarbrough Electrical Engineer Dr. Pat Donohoe Faculty Advisor

OVERVIEW Problem Solution Constraints Technical Practical System Overview Approach Timeline Progress Q&A [2]

PROBLEM The issue with alarm companies of today is that they overcharge for the service they are offering. In the United States nearly 2 million households are broken into each year [4]. In the United States, only 17% of homes in the U.S. have a home security system [4].

SOLUTION The Home Alarm System is going to change the face of the market by offering an easy, self-install alarm system that offers the same great protection as other companies without the overpriced rates.

TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS Communication SystemsThe microprocessor must always communicate with the sensors and the remote server. Power SupplyThe battery inside the alarm system must last at least 20 minutes with full load on the battery. Mobile ApplicationThe mobile application must always function properly even after the phone undergoes a firmware update. Server FunctionThe user must always receive a notification within 10 seconds of the alarm being tripped. SensorsThe sensors must always detect motion and send a signal when the reed switch is separated from the magnet

PRACTICAL CONSTRAINTS CostHome Alarm system’s installation and monthly costs for this package must be less than what the big companies offer. ReliabilityThe system’s battery life must last for at least 20 minutes with full load on the battery. The server and mobile application must be operational at all time and will require maintenance

COST ADT and other big alarm companies offer similar packages for $36.99 a month with a +$99 installation fee [1] The Home Alarm system is designed for home owners who want escape high monthly and installation fees from alarm system companies.

RELIABILITY The battery must be able to last for at least 20 minutes when there is full load on the battery. If the user does not respond to the application after 20 minutes the application will automatically notify emergency services. The Android smart phone application will provide the battery life information of each sensor.
