Isaiah 6: 1-8, 2 Chronicles 26: 16-23

-Liberal Theologian Robert MacAfee Brown: “This is the essence of American Religion – I like sinning and God likes forgiving, and the world is well put together”. (terrible, right?) -John Calvin, “Essence is to know God and know ourselves…” -In Isaiah 6: 1-8… notice the phrase “In the year that King Uzziah died.” (Who?) -2 Chronicles 26: 1-15 sum up his reign. -Near perfect king, right? V. 16 “But…”

-Read 2 Chronicles 26: 16-23… -Uzziah a good king until pride = fall! -Kings often saw selves as priests, he thought he should too. -God gave him leprosy on forehead? -Priests came to altar with headdress with precious stone on forehead inscribed “Holy to the Lord”! -Holiness of God the only reason the priest could offer a sacrifice for sin!!

-Isaiah makes comparison ‘Almighty God and leper king.’ -Even ‘angels of burning light’ need to cover their eyes before holiness of God! -Smoke reminded where Uzziah was… -Vision reminded how he ‘dissed’ God! -Isaiah knew lips call out “unclean!” -Seraph ‘cleans’ lips = guilt taken away, sin atoned (paid) for! -Altar of incense is place of atonement!

-On the cross Jesus did what Uzziah tried but could never do – pay for sins! -“The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Is. 53:6) “After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied.” (Is. 53:11) -Avoid pride, Holy God is working in you! -Accept His salvation, obey in gratitude!
