Reference Resources Objective: Today I can list characteristics of reference resources.

Essential Questions 1. What is a/an _____ (atlas, almanac, dictionary, thesaurus, CD-ROM, website)? How do you determine when to use it? 2. What are reference resources? How do you determine which is the best resource to use?

What are types of reference resources ? Periodical Encyclopedia Newspaper Dictionary Almanac Atlas Electronic Source Thesaurus

why would I use them? Reference resources help us find information quickly! So say you want to find out what the score of last night’s U of A football game? Where should you look?

How Do I know which ONe to Use? Don’t worry.....It’s easy! Each reference material has special characteristics that make it perfect for finding specific information! Let’s check them out!!!!

Note-taking time!!!! First up Periodicals Contain articles Many subjects and topics Often published monthly or weekly Current events, but not published daily Examples: Sports Illustrated Newsweek People

Encyclopedia Set of books organized alphabetically Gives information about people, places and events in the past Examples: World War II Penguins Albert Einstein Brazil

Newspaper Daily current events Local (Tucson) State (Arizona Daily Star) Country (USA Today) Examples: Events that happened yesterday (Football scores:) Today’s weather

Dictionary You are all pros at dictionary skills! Turn and whisper to your neighbor what we can look up in the dictionary. Did you say definition, syllabication, pronunciation, part of speech and word origin? You’ve got it!

Almanac A book that contains facts and information Published yearly (annually) Only has information from certain year Examples: Sport Stats Weather Farming Major events of a year

Atlas Book of maps Locations What the land is like (desert, rainforests, mountains, etc.) What countries produce on their land (oil, coffee, wheat, corn) Use this resources when you want to know: Where a place is located What it is like there Distance between two places

electronic Source Information that is up to the minute Often times there are online versions of the other reference resources Basketball score right now Weather at this moment

THesaurus You are all fantastic writers! So a thesaurus is the perfect tool to use to improve your word choice! A thesaurus will give you synonyms and antonyms for a word. It will also tell the part of speech. Need a new word to use instead of “good”? You know where to look!

Now it’s time.... TO SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW! GET THOSE SLATES OUT! Number your slates Do your best to pick the best reference resource to find the information.
