I. Ten Lessons from Proverbs

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 1. Have a plan (16:3,9) “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 2. Give to God First (3:9-10) “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 3. Don’t Try to Get Rich Quick (28:20) “A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 4. Establish your income before you spend (24:27) “Finish your outdoor work and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 5. Avoid spending traps (27:12) “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 6. Avoid borrowing (22:7) “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 7. Don’t co-sign for others (22:26-27) “Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 8. Save and buy later, rather than borrow to buy sooner (21:20) “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 9. Save for foreseeable future needs (6:6-8) “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

Ten Lessons from Proverbs 10. Work hard (6:9-11) “How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest-- and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.”

III. Steps to Plan for Your Future

Steps to Plan for Your Future 1. Set a simple standard of living (I Timothy 6:7-8) “For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

Steps to Plan for Your Future 2. Count the cost of big items (Luke 14:28-30) “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'”

Steps to Plan for Your Future 3. Lay up treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
